Porbandar Stone Work

Porbandar stone is the creamy white limestone quarried along the Saurashtra coast, and it has shaped the look of Gujarat's civic and religious architecture for generations. Its appeal is a combination that is rare in building stone: it is soft enough to carve in fine detail, yet durable once it has seasoned in place.

Workable when fresh, tough when seasoned

Freshly quarried Porbandar stone carries quarry sap and cuts readily, which is exactly why traditional carvers favour it. As that moisture leaves and the surface seasons, the stone hardens appreciably. This is why the carving schedule matters, detail work is best cut while the block is still green, and we plan deliveries around the carving programme rather than stockpiling for months.

Detail and ornament

Where a project calls for jali screens, moulded cornices, carved capitals or temple detail, Porbandar is usually the right answer. The stone holds an undercut cleanly and the pale surface reads detail well even in flat light, deep shadow is not needed to make the carving legible.

Care on site

Being a limestone, it is more sensitive to acidic cleaning agents than sandstone. We protect finished faces during the rest of the build and clean only with water and a soft brush. Given that, Porbandar work ages extremely well and simply mellows in tone.
